PFUJ condemns thrashing of journalist

ISLAMABAD (PPI) – The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has strongly condemned torture of Mr Abdul Rehman Afridi, a senior journalist, and demanded immediate arrest of culprits involved in physical assaulting and injuries to the editor.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, the PFUJ Secretary General Shamsul Islam Naz said that Mr Rehman Afridi was reportedly beaten up by five persons the other day.
It was stated that Wali Jakhrani, with his companions, allegedly entered the office of Daily oSitara, threatened Afridi of dire consequences.
Mr Afridi was beaten up with wooden sticks and the attackers also used fists and kicks. Afridi reportedly received injuries in his arms, shoulder, back and legs and was rushed to the local hospital for treatment.
According to his colleagues, he was beaten up for publishing news stories about alleged mismanagement in distribution of relief among floods victims of the area by the district government. Afridi alleged that ohe was beaten up by the supporters of Mir Aijaz Hussain Khan Jakhrani, Federal Minister for Sports who were led by his cousin Wali Jakhrani”.
The PFUJ urged the Sindh Chief Minister and Home Minister of the Sindh to ensure safety and protection of media persons working in the Sindh, adding it was their constitutional and moral duty to provide a conducive environment for media persons.
